Frage zu BVE 2 ATS/ATC

    ich habe vor einer Weile eine BVE 2 Anleitung verfasst und es stoert mich, dass das Kapitel ueber die BVE 2 Sicherungssysteme immer noch unvollstandig und moeglicherweise inkorrect ist. Ich habe das Kapitel in diesen Beitrag kopiert und wuerde mich ueber jede konstruktive Kritik freuen. Ich bin mir besonders unsicher ueber ATC - ich kann nur raten wozu die ATC RELEASE and EMG OPERATION Leuchten gut sind, und ich vermute, dass ATC EMG mehr anzeigt als ich geschrieben habe. Kann mir jemand helfen?

    BVE 2 is equipped with several Japanese safety systems that are used on many routes. They are the Automatic Train Stop system in two of its incarnations, ATS-S and ATS-P, and Automatic Train Control (ATC).


    It is not possible in BVE 2 to implement any other safety system, but some developers have used ATS and ATC to simulate an approximation of other systems, including semi-functional versions of the Automatic Warning System (AWS) used on British mainline track, and Train Stops (tripcocks) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) on London Underground Lines (LUL).


    When you load a route, the train’s safety systems are set for ATS-S mode or ATC mode. If route and train are equipped for ATS-P, the train’s systems are switched from ATS-S to ATS-P by a transponder in the track as your train passes over it. If the train allows both ATS and ATC, you can switch between them by pressing ‘Page Up’ for ATS and ‘Page Down’ for ATC.


    The safety systems can be deactivated with ‘Ctrl+F2’. To activate them, press ‘Shift+F2’. If the brakes are in the emergency position, activation is suspended until you change the brake notch to a service position (B3, B2, …). If the safety systems panel is grey after you loaded a route, the system is in this state of suspended activation until you move the brake handle. Once the systems are active, a chime will sound that you can turn off by pressing ‘Insert’.


    If you failed to acknowledge an alert in time or passed a red signal equipped with a safety device that stopped you, you will need to reset the safety systems: ‘Ctrl+F2’, then ‘Shift+F2’, then ‘Insert’. You must change the power notch to neutral before you can apply power again. You do not need to apply the brakes.


    Details regarding the various systems:



    ATS-S plays an alarm sound in the cab when you approach a red signal. To avoid an application of emergency brakes, you must acknowledge the alarm (by pressing ‘Space’ in BVE 2) and apply the brakes within five seconds. A reminder signal will sound that should not be reset (by pressing ‘Insert’) until the train has come to a stop because the system cannot force you to stop at the red signal. Indicators in the panel:


    ATS. The lamp is lit orange when ATS-S is active.
    ATS RUN. The lamp is flashing red when an ATS alert or the vigilance alert (see Vigilance Device, p.25) was not acknowledged in time.
    FAILURE. In the prototype, this can indicate that a failure has been detected in ATS control; in BVE, it is lit red during the ATS activation and when you have tripped the safety systems and need to reset them.



    ATS-P is a more complex system that calculates continually the maximum speed which will allow the train to comfortably stop before the next red signal and to obey certain speed restrictions on the line. If the driver exceeds this speed by more than 10 km/h, service brakes will be applied until a safe speed is achieved. (After such a brake application, you will need to put the power handle in neutral before you can apply power again). You can prevent the application of the brakes during the next 60 seconds by pressing ‘End’ (you must do so before the system applies the brakes). If the train passes a red signal, emergency brakes will be applied. Indicators:


    P POWER. The lamp is lit green when ATS-P is ready to be activated by the transponder in the track.
    PTN APPROACH. Lights orange (and a chime sounds) when you come within 50 meters or 5 km/h of a forced brake application by ATS-P. Remains lit during the braking.
    BRAKE RELEASE. The lamp is lit green when the driver has temporarily deactivated automatic brake applications.
    BRAKE APPLY. The lamp is lit orange when ATS-P has applied the service brakes.
    ATS-P. Once ATS-P is activated by the transponder, the ATS-P lamp is lit green and the ATS lamp is turned off.



    ATC is an in-cab signaling system. The train receives the current speed limit via radio signal and displays it in the cab. If you exceed the speed limit, the service brakes are applied.


    In BVE 2, you may need to switch to ATC manually even if the route is equipped for it. The speed limit is usually displayed in the middle of the speedometer. Indicators:


    ATC. Lit orange when ATC is active.
    ATC POWER. Lit orange when ATC is active.
    ATC SVC. Lit orange when ATC has activated the service brakes.
    ATC EMG. Lit red if the route is not equipped for ATC.



    AWS is simulated in BVE 2 using ATS functionality. The system sounds a warning before block signals that show an aspect other than green and also before a warning board for an upcoming speed restriction. You acknowledge the warning by pressing ‘Insert’. Note that if the track is signaled for bidirectional operation, you may be given a warning meant only for trains going in the opposite direction.


    The prototypical system also provides a visual warning in the cab (the AWS “sunflowerâ€) and applies emergency brakes for a full minute if the AWS warning is not acknowledge in time (about 2-3 seconds). This behavior is not simulated in BVE 2. The system may, however, apply emergency brakes if you passed a red signal, in which case you will need to reset the safety systems.


    Since AWS is mimicked by ATS, the warning will also sound when the system were suspended at startup and you first release the emergency brakes. This is consistent with the behavior of trains equipped with AWS, which oblige you to acknowledge the warning horn when you open the desk.



    LUL Train Stops, also known as tripcocks, are mechanical devices that stop the train if it passed a red signal. BVE 2 Underground routes with manual train operation employ ATS functionality. If you passed a red signal, you will need to reset the safety systems. (In reality, there would also be a replacement driver taking over your train).



    LUL ATO, in reality, performs all functions of the driver except door operation. BVE 2 opens and closes the doors for you, but you need to apply power manually because ATO is mimicked by ATC, which can control the brakes but not the motor power.


    Once the route file has been loaded, switch to ATC and put the reverser into forward. Now you move from station to station as follows. When BVE has closed the doors, apply power (usually, increase power to the highest notch). You will be brought to a stop at the next station. Braking for a station tends to be rough; do not be surprised if your passengers are unhappy. When the train has stopped and the doors are open, shut off power and engage the brakes. Switch to ATS and back to ATC. Wait again until the doors are closed, apply power, and so forth.
