Railway download from satellite pictures ...

  • Dear friends of LokSim3D ...

... My name is Peter, or even better: LokSimPeter ...

Since a couple of years I developed a system to download railways from statellite pictures as osm-files. I do this by using JOSM (Java Open Street Map) for downloading, filtering, processing as osm, followed by the conversion of all rails to l3Dstr-files in LokSim3D.

Thousands of railways from all over the world exist in BING, a big data resource for OSM-Data from UK. With easy tools I can filter railway information (and also others) out of the OSM-Data.

I offer cooperation to those who plan to start a new simulation project. You describe the planned railway from Start to Destination. Then we extract tracks we want to see (not all tracks are really worth to be visible during our tour).

Then I convert this to LokSim3D including switches and crossings. The rest is your job under full control and compatibility of LokSimEdit. I will ask you to install JOSM to your PC, and you should become familiar with this nice program. It is very powerful, easy to use, and very well maintained by the JOSM community. AND: it comes for free (like LokSim3D and LokSimEdit).

What do you think? Are you interested?

    Best regards from Germany ...

  • Dear LokSimPeter,

I am interested in learning how to create l3dstr files from satellite images.
I intend to start creating railway lines that I know.
I await instructions/indications on how to proceed.
    Best regards,

    EdC

  • Hello Edc

I'm Andre and a co-author of Peter's, and I'll try to mediate between you, as Peter isn't online very often here in the forum.

So, I'll tell Peter that you're interested in converting satellite images to Loksim3D.

First, we need to know your desired route, as we usually share the work, especially for large projects. Please also note that Loksim3D imposes some restrictions. For example, it's highly recommended to divide longer routes and larger stations into modules, which, for route modules with extensive layout, should not exceed a length of 10 km, as this can become confusing.

Should I ask Peter to send you a existing documentation on the conversion process?

    Please respond.

    Regards

    Andre

  • Dear Andre,
I have an idea of the restrictions on creating lines in Loksim3D.

I believe that I should divide the line into several modules, with each station in an isolated module, each section between stations in an isolated module (including stops in this module).

For my first project, I thought of the Cascais Line, a suburban line in Lisbon, Portugal, with a total length of around 25 km.
<https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linha_de_Cascais> (wikipedia page about the line).

I would appreciate it if you could send me the documentation on the conversion process.

    Best regards,

    EdC

  • Dear EdC

I'm very pleased that you've understood some of the basic rules for track construction in Loksim3D and are willing to follow them. I'd be happy to continue to contact between Peter and you and i´ll provide details of the conversion process in a private conversation. Why? For one simple reason: each project is unique and could only be explained in general terms publicly, as I would otherwise fear that it wouldn't be feasible for individual users and project requirements.

Thanks for the link to the overview of your desired route.

We (Peter and I) will be happy to take a look at the project; a 25 km line should be work.

    Regards,

    Andre
